Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter produced by the brain. Itโ€™s a natural brain relaxant as it blocks certain impulses between nerve cells and decreases nervous system activity. When GABA attaches to its receptor, a calming effect is produced on the brain and body. GABA may be used to help decrease anxiety and stress, prevent seizures, reduce fear, improve mood, help with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), improve sleep quality, reduce inflammation, treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), lower blood pressure, and increase the growth of lean muscle mass.
